INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Motor Speedway reverted to its original purpose Thursday — serving as a test track for new automobile technology. The lessons learned about IndyCar’s new hybrid cars could reverberate throughout next season.Four drivers, including reigning series champ Alex Palou, spent Thursday turning laps on the 2.5-mile Brickyard in race cars equipped with paddles or buttons used to store or deploy extra energy while cars are on the track. The early reviews were mixed.“It’s certainly not fast,” 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi said. “Right now, it’s just a lot of experimenting and playing around with different kinds of theories. Western governments are urging Israel to show restraint in its military campaign against Hamas in Gaza, as fears grow that the conflict could spiral out of control. On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and French President Emmanuel Macron combined their support for Israel’s right to retaliate with a warning: That response must be fair. “Israel has the right to defend itself by eliminating terrorist groups such as Hamas through targeted action, but preserving civilian populations is the duty of democracies,” Macron said on Thursday night. “The only response to terrorism is always a strong and fair one. Speaking alongside Benjamin Netanyahu at a press conference, Blinken said that while “Israel has the right to defend itself … how Israel does this matters.” Their concerns were privately echoed by other Western officials, who warned that ...
