BEIJING (AP) — China’s factory activity contracted for another month in June as export orders decreased, an official survey showed Friday, adding to signs an economic rebound following the end of anti-virus controls is cooling.A monthly purchasing managers’ index issued by the national statistics agency and an industry group edged up to 49 from May’s 48.8 on a 100-point scale on which readings below 50 show activity contracting. The world’s second-largest economy revived following the end in December of anti-virus controls on travel and business activity. But that faded faster than expected due to lackluster consumer spending at home and weak demand for exports following interest rate hikes in the United States and Europe to cool inflation.Despite that, China’s No. 2 leader, Premier Li Qiang, said this week economic growth accelerated in the April-June period from the previous quarter’s 4.5% rate. Li gave no details but expressed confidence China can hit the ruling Communist Pa...

US actively considering giving cluster munitions to Ukraine

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:15:35 GMT

The Biden administration is actively considering sending cluster munitions to Ukraine to help Kyiv’s counteroffensive punch through Russia’s defenses, two U.S. officials and a person familiar with the debate said. The discussion to send dual-purpose improved conventional munitions has intensified in recent days as Ukraine’s effort to break through Russia’s frontline has stalled. The belief among some senior U.S. officials is that the munitions could be one of many tools that makes Ukraine’s campaign more successful.Late last year, the administration said it had “concerns” about delivering the munitions to Ukraine, mainly for humanitarian reasons and also the U.S. didn’t assess Ukraine needed them at that point. The administration never ruled out their delivery, but cluster munitions didn’t receive a serious look as there were other priority items to give to Kyiv first. But the internal administration debate over their use has intensified since the sputtering counteroffensive...

‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ flounders as tale of high school angst

What is a teenage kraken to do? Well, she could try going away, which I’m sure will happen soon. Dreamworks’ “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” tells the story of a not-quite-human-looking adolescent kraken, which according to one source is an “enormous, mythical sea monster said to appear off the coast of Norway.” In “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” the title character Ruby (Lana Condor) is a “mathlete,” who does not fit in at her seaside high school, which could be because she is blue with fins for ears.Ruby and her somewhat less outlandish best friends, including Margot (Liza Koshy), have made a pact not to attend prom. But when Ruby learns that Margot and the others are going to prom, she has a crisis of identity. You see Ruby, her real-estate sales-working mother Agatha (Toni Collette), father Arthur (Coleman Domingo), who runs a company called Bottled Up, little brother Sam (Blue Chapman) are all krakens. They are no longer kraken-sized because they no longer live in th...
